Commercial Farming

REWA-GRAINS-3Despite its relatively small share of the total GDP, primary agriculture is an important sector of our economy. The local grain and oilseeds industry is one of the largest agricultural sectors, making a major contribution to the country’s total gross agricultural production.

Uganda has a dual agricultural economy, with both well-developed commercial farming and more subsistence-based production in the deep rural areas. The stability and future growth of the sector is imperative to provide food security to the Ugandan population and it is a key focus of the New Growth Path for Rewa Grains. The NGP is also a plan by the government to create 5 million new jobs by 2030.

Cereals and Grains are the largest and most important locally produced field crop, a dietary staple, a source of livestock feed, and an export crop. Maize and soya farming is currently Rewa Grains primary focus, with the intent of further providing other value addition services such as drying, sorting and milling.

Cereals and grains

Grains and cereals are Rewa Grains’s primary crops, occupying more than 60 percent of hectare under cultivation. Maize, the country’s most important crop, is a dietary staple, a source of livestock feed, and an export crop. Government programs, including generous loans and extension services, have been crucial to the Rewa Grains’s self-sufficiency in this enterprise. Maize is grown commercially on the farm, and we further partner with more than 120 small farmers to ensure constant supply of the grain.
